This festival was introduced to Hawaii with the arrival of Protestant missionaries, and is believed to have started after 1820. Most of the traditions they currently celebrate come from the missionaries.
The annual Honolulu City Lights ceremony features a 50-foot Norfolk pine Christmas tree decorated with bright lights and elaborate decorations, live entertainment, and a large meal is eaten. As the beach is often nearby in Hawaii, surfing or swimming often takes place in the waters, and the traditional Santa's sleigh and reindeer are replaced by an outrigger canoe pulled by dolphins.

El Festival de las luces conocido también como Fiesta del 8 de diciembre o Día de las iluminaciones, es un evento popular que se realiza cada año, cuatro días alrededor del 8 de diciembre, siendo ésta la fecha tradicional del evento, en Lyon.
Conmemora los milagros de la Virgen María, que primero, y siempre según los lioneses, salvó al pueblo de la peste (1643); y que luego, en 1852, el día de la inauguración del monumento de agradecimiento a la Virgen por aquel suceso del siglo XVII, fue adjudicada responsable de que se esfumara inexplicablemente una apoteótica tormenta que se batía sobre el cielo lionés.
Características: inicialmente se celebró con velas. Con el paso del tiempo mutó a una fiesta que traspasó las fronteras de Lyon, con participación de artistas, llegada de turistas, y todo el uso de los avances tecnológicos al servicio "des lumières".

Weihnachten in Deutschland: Sankt Nikolaus & Nikolaustag (El día de San Nicolás) Alemania
En la noche del 5 de diciembre, víspera de San Nicolás (Nikolaustag) los niños ponen delante de la puerta sus zapatos y esperan que Nikolaus los llene con dulces, frutas o nueces. Con Sankt Nikolaus llegan los regalos que suelen ser chocolates, dulces, nueces y pequeñas sorpresas que aparecen en las botas y los zapatos que se han colocado a la puerta de casa. En la mañana del 6 de diciembre los niños salen a ver que les ha dejado Nikolaus en los zapatos. En las escuelas y guarderías se recibe la visita de los Papás Noel, y en las empresas hay también una pequeña fiesta en la que el más joven empleado está obligado a disfrazarse de San Nicolás y a repartir regalos o pequeños presentes entre los compañeros.
En algunas familias es costumbre que esa noche venga Nikolaus personalmente con su acompañante. Visita a los niños vestido con su manto de obispo, con una barba blanca larga, la gorra episcopal, el bastón de obispo y un libro dorado del cual lee a los niños cómo se han portado, repartiendo alabanzas pero también reprochando algunas cosas. La pregunta típica que hace Nikolaus a los niños: habéis sido buenos? (seid ihr alle brav gewesen?).
